XXIII. Eschaton
Sun, June 10, 2007 - 7:15 PMThe object at the end of time grows nearer with every passing moment. Stare into this abyss, and you will unmistakably feel it staring back into you. It's getting nearer, and it will blow the house down. This is a dangerous card, a working card. Put your will into this card, and the eschaton WILL come sooner.

Re: Chaos Tarot Deck, 23
Mon, June 11, 2007 - 4:11 PMThe cards are really neat looking; but I wonder why the description of the minor arcana gives different correspondences concerning the elements that are associated with the different suits? They have attributed the Swords with Fire when they are traditionally Air, The Wands with Earth when they are traditionally Fire, and the Coins with Air when they are traditionally Earth. They do give the correct correspondence for the Cups as Water. -

Re: Chaos Tarot Deck, 23
Mon, June 11, 2007 - 8:26 PMAdolf-- I noticed the same thing. I mean, it is the Chaos tarot deck, and all, but...?
I do agree that the images are interesting. -

Re: Chaos Tarot Deck, 23
Tue, June 12, 2007 - 12:32 AMYeah, if chaos was the theme, and that explained why the attributions were as they were, then . . . why structure it in every other sense so "loyal" to the basic format? I mean, 22 Major arcana cards which (pretty much) follow the original paradigm, (with just one added to justify the "discordian" element), four suits of the minor arcana (which include the original four elements) but minus the four court cards. I don't know.........maybe it's "MAYBE LOGIC". -

Re: Chaos Tarot Deck, 23
Tue, June 12, 2007 - 1:04 PMIn communication with JM Berger...creator of Chaos Tarot Deck
The correction is now on line: XXIII. Eschaton
"...I made a conscious decision to change the
elemental-suit associations. When
you look at the fractal pallette, the decision to
associate wands and earth
is a pretty easy one -- I had the concept of
green branches firmly fixed in
my mind from the start.
Pentacles, as coins and significators of wealth,
seem better reflected by
air than earth -- because I tend to view money
and the physical fortunes of
life as being fleeting and somewhat intangible.
However, I did end up
sacrificing some of the home and hearth imagery,
which is a bit of a loss.
I do think fire imagery perfectly reflects the
Swords conflict concepts, and
also the idea of fire as that which tempers
metal.
As far as the correlations, I have faith I will
work it out eventually, but
I haven't done all of the correlations yet. In
some cases, it will be tricky
because there are Tarot concepts that don't
readily align with i-Ching --
for instance, there is no obviously equivalent
hexagram to the 10 of Swords
(Fire), which signifies physical death.
If you click around the site much, you'll also
see I am very interested in
i-Ching structure (iching.egoplex.com/).
But I have painted myself
into a bit of a corner in terms of synchronizing
the deck's structure to the
i-Ching, for various technical reasons (mostly
having to do with the uneven
balance between major and minor arcana). I will
want the correlations to
have structural significance, which makes it a
much bigger and more
intimidating job. But hopefully not
insurmountable.... -

Re: Chaos Tarot Deck, 23
Tue, June 12, 2007 - 2:49 PMI did notice, of course, the correlation with the I'Ching. By virtue of the number difference between your typical tarot deck and the I'Ching, I can understand the challenge. Thank you for posting this comment, Aleksonder. Some explanation about the change in elements on the web-site might be beneficial, so as not to turn off any potential buyers.
I am a bit of purist, which is not to say that I am inflexible. My first reaction, however, was definitely WTF?. Not to be curmudgeonly, because I do think the artwork is stunning, but I LIKE the correlation in traditional tarot decks between swords and air-- cutting through the BS, the mental plane. Our thoughts, in my opinion, are infinitely more fleeting than the trees that sprout from the Earth, and many other representations of the material plane. I could go on, but I don't think it necessary.
I commend the creator for his/her? work and the expansion of the concept. It feels like the deck is in a process of refinement. As art, the deck is intriguing. As a tool, I would probably wait until the creator had finalized the product before buying it.
I like the yin/yang spread on the web-site, by the way.
